Can you believe we’re already halfway through January? 🎉 If you’re like me, you kicked off the year with some New Year’s resolutions and are determined to see them through. But sticking to resolutions isn’t always easy.
Did you know that only ~9% of New Year’s resolutions are kept, and ~43% are dropped by the end of January? Those are tough odds, but don’t worry—you’re not alone! Here are some practical tips to help you join that 9% and make meaningful progress toward the changes you’ve set your sights on this year.
1. Set a Daily Routine for Your Goal ⏰
The easiest way to stay consistent is to dedicate time to your resolution daily. Whether your goal is hitting the gym, learning to play guitar, or finally mastering a new language, block off at least 20 minutes daily.
It takes an average of 66 days to form a habit, so you’re just getting started. But the best way to get there is to tackle it one day at a time. Keep showing up for yourself!
2. Find a Partner-in-Change 🤝
Everything is easier (and more fun) with a buddy! Chances are someone in your family, friend group, or workplace has a similar goal. Team up to hold each other accountable, encourage each other, and celebrate small wins together.
No one comes to mind? Try looking for a local club or online community to connect with like-minded people who can cheer you on and keep you motivated.
3. Use Physical Reminders 📝
Digital reminders can get lost in the sea of notifications, so keep them physical and visible. A sticky note on the fridge, bathroom mirror, or even your laptop can be a powerful nudge to keep you on track.
The best reminder system is the one that works for you. Experiment until you find what feels right!
4. Stay Flexible: Adapt, Don’t Skip 🔄
Life happens, and some days, your perfect plan might not work out. That’s okay! Instead of skipping your resolution entirely, find ways to adapt:
1. Short on time to hit the gym? Do a quick 10-minute workout at home. (Try this: 10 push-
ups, 5 pull-ups, and 20 squats every minute for 10 minutes—it’s more challenging than it
sounds!)
2. No time to sit down with a book? Listen to an audiobook while commuting or cooking
dinner.
Progress is progress, no matter how small. Remember, it’s about consistency, not perfection!
Sticking to your resolutions takes effort, but with some planning, support, and flexibility, you can stay on track and make lasting changes. Keep showing up for yourself; you’ll be part of that 9% before you know it! And if your goals revolve around academics or getting into that dream school, we’ve got you covered.
Let’s make this year the one where your resolutions stick. You’ve got this!
