Steve grew up in Newton, went to Newton North High School, then attended Washington University in St Louis. He has an MS from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and an MAT from Simmons College. In 1995, he left his job as a sports journalist in Pennsylvania and started teaching English back home. He has never once regretted the switch. He’s taught at Belmont High School, Newton North High School, and, for the past 15 years, at Wellesley High School. Each year he makes sure he teaches a mix of ages and abilities, from honors seniors to ninth graders just acquainting themselves with the challenges of high school. Steve writes everyday and is passionate about language, about how to read to enrich your mind and life, and about how to craft sentences that are clear and concise, sharp and stylistic. As a tutor, he strives for clarity and directness and loves seeing his students gain knowledge that leads to confidence. When not teaching, Steve cherishes the time he spends with his daughter—they particularly like climbing mountains, walking their dog, Nico, and reading good stories out loud.
