It’s happening….The tone of parent calls have changed from “let’s get ahead of this” to “we need support yesterday”. It’s October and students are feeling the weight of a full academic load! Whether it echoes of “I have too much work!” or “These tests are impossible,” we’ve got some tips on how to support them on getting back on track!
1) Create a Study Sanctuary 🏠
With the holiday season coming up, home life can get busy! Help your student carve out a distraction-free time and space for studying. Consistency is key, so try to keep study time at the same hour each day. A quiet spot with minimal interruptions makes a huge difference!
2) Stay on Top of Deadlines ⏳
The last thing your student needs is a surprise test or project deadline! Make sure they have a system in place for tracking important dates—from colorful calendars to digital reminders, keeping track of deadlines helps them manage their time effectively.
3) Foster a Growth Mindset 🌱
Encourage your student to see challenges as opportunities to grow. When they face difficulties, praise the effort, not just the results. Saying things like, “I’m proud of how hard you’re working” can go a long way in building resilience. (Psst, you can read more about growth mindset here!)
4) Connect the Dots to Their Goals 🎯
Help your student understand how each class ties into their future aspirations. Whether it’s science building a foundation for a future career or math helping them solve real-world problems, tying schoolwork to goals makes it more meaningful.
5) Refine Their Note-Taking 📝
Is your student reviewing their notes, or are they lost in a sea of scribbles? Encourage them to revisit their notes and organize them in a way that makes sense for them (i.e., rewriting digitally, note cards, etc). A good note-taking system can make studying much more effective!
